Effective policies and procedures are essential to the success of any road safety program. As an organization thinks about its safety priorities and decides what measures it will put in place to address those hazards, it is necessary to communicate that information – explain what employees are expected to do, and how they are expected to do it.

Road safety policies and procedures are the company instructions that managers, supervisors and drivers apply to safely carry out their driving duties. There’s a lot riding on these policies and procedures, so it’s important to design and build ones that work.

This course focuses on two closely linked topics:

  1. how to construct prudent road safety policies with clear objectives and language that guide the decisions and actions, particularly of managers and supervisors, and
  2. how to couple policies with straightforward procedures that make sense to employees and that they can apply to safely execute the work-related driving they do.

Purpose and learning objectives

The purpose of this course is to build your understanding of what policies and procedures are, the linkages between them and their similarities and differences. More importantly, completing this course will provide you with practical skills to plan and build policies and safe work procedures that work for your employees and organization.

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

  1. Describe policy and safe work procedure in a road safety context, and the functional relationships between the two.
  2. Apply a framework for building road safety policies and procedures that fit your workplace.
  3. Identify the road safety matters for which employers should build and implement policies and procedures.
